Writing in the time of COVID-19: Day Three

Homemade BreadThe bread turned out decent enough. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have attempted to bake bread if it weren’t for the “shelter-in-place” mandates that come with COVID-19.

But I’m sure we’re all learning new things during these times. Like not to leave the house without our hand sanitizer. But also things like whether we possess the hoarding gene or not.

Today’s COVID-19 count in Hawaii jumped by 21. We’re now at 77 cases statewide. Amazingly, Kauai’s number is staying steady at three. Does that mean we are doing a better job at sheltering in place? Are we just lucky so far? Will our time come?

The other big news in Hawaii is that Governor Ige issued a statewide stay-at-home order through the end of April. This in addition to the 14-day quarantine for all incoming travelers.

Meanwhile, the sun is still shining. Chickens are still clucking and roosters still crowing outside my window. I can still hear cars driving past the house outside. Speaking of cars, the dealership ran a diagnostics on our Prius’ hybrid system and called to say everything is fine. The warning message is standard whenever the car’s 12v battery goes dead, is disconnected, or gets replaced. It seems Eric left a light on inside the car while he was detailing it last week. So, basically, its visit to the dealership was a wellness check.

Consider this a wellness check: How are you doing?

Be well.

Your stories of bread make me wonder when I’ll ever see yeast again. Soon, I hope. (We’ve *got* flour.) Otherwise, it’s been a gloomy rainy day here, but heck: we need rain! And the afternoon had a dry spell when we got out to the Frog Pond with the pupster. Thanks for your posts. It’s nice to stay connected (through something a little more focused than social media).

According to this evening’s update, we have a 4th positive on island and several others ‘under investigation…hey ho, and so it goes!
I played tennis to today with 3 close friends (ok, it as ‘close’ as we used to be!) we were very careful to keep our distance; hand sanitizers in evidence and frequent use, while respectful 6-foot distant bows replaced the usual fist bumps and bear hugs at the end of the match.
However, as I suspected, it seems this was our last tennis for many weeks following today’s announcement of the Statewide stay-at-home policy starting Wednesday.
Evidently, there is even more walking in my future…glad I recently bulk-bought several pairs of trainers!
    Stay safe, stay sane!

    Good morning, Kim,

Self isolation in sunny Florida continues.

From my stand point, sadly our Governor will not mandate a stay- at- home order which I feel is utterly crucial in abating the virus. He worries that doing so many of our Floridians will flee the state. Florida is seeing this happening since New York has a stay-at- home order. There are hundreds of people fleeing New York, New Jersey and Connecticut through just under 200 flights to Florida from these areas. The Governor had mandated that these visitors be examined on the planes and are to self quarantine for 14 days. Not doing so is a misdemeanor.

    Enough on the government!

    Your bread looks yummy! Congratulations!!

So glad that your car passed its wellness check!

Love and hugs to you and Eric

Many of our government officials–local, state, and national–are showing their flaws right now. Sadly. And, yet, some others are rising to the occasion.

Kim, your bread looks a lot like your grandmother’s coffee cake. Nevertheless it is bread. Suggest you wear gloves and a mask when you go out to check those chicks.

I thought the same thing, Dad. It’s the same shape as Grandma’s. And I’m super careful. Please do the same. Love you.

Hey Kim. I must confess that I think of all these new ‘habits’ people are forming to cope/survive/thrive in this NEW normal. Some good (and should have already been a habit) like washing hands and having more awareness of covering your mouth when coughing. There are those that I hope are only temporary habits (and will end once things go back to the OLD normal…if that is even possible) like more screen time, more waste there is much more single-use waste because of the cleanliness factor, and such. You know what I miss? Trust. Good, old-fashioned trust. Not skepticism. Not cynicism. Not disbelief. Trust in someone’s good intentions.
